- Research Interests:
Dr. Bassett is a conservation biologist and geographic information systems specialist with over 15 years experience in using computers to address spatial natural resource issues. Utilizing algorithm optimization techniques to locate conservation reserves he has addressed how aesthetics and vertebrate diversity interact to add value to a conservation network. He has applied geographic information science to a host of land use concerns in various locations around the world. He has been an active participant within the Gap Analysis program for the states of Utah and Nevada. Recently, he developed spatial models to address how various land use decisions impact the natural resources within the Upper San Pedro River Watershed, Arizona USA and Sonora Mexico and for the region between San Diego and Los Angeles, California, USA. He is currently managing the spatial aspects of multiple projects. These include: desert terrain forecasting for the US military, vegetation change predictions for the Gold Coast Region, NSW, scenario assessments for the DOE SHOAL site, and precipitation predications within the Walker-Carson River system in Nevada.
