Research Interests:

My research interests include assessment of the effects of large-scale perturbations such as climate change and acid rain on nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems with an emphasis on soil biogeochemical processes. During my Ph.D. research I studied the effects of climate change on microbial C and N transformation and soil chemistry in boreal forest soils. This study involved experimental manipulation (CO2 and temperature) of two small forested catchments in southern Norway. My current research projects mainly involve experimental studies and focus on the the impacts of increased N deposition and precipitation on Mojave Desert ecosystems. More specifically I am interested in assessing potential linkages between below-ground biotic and abiotic processes. This project is in collaboration with Jay Arnone, Giles Marion and Eric McDonald at DRI. Other projects that I am involved with include 1) development of spreadsheet-based models to simulate nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems (with Dale Johnson at UNR), 2) measuring effects of land use on soil P and N dynamics in the Lake Tahoe basin (with Gayle Dana and Rick Susfalk at DRI) and, 3) measuring effects of inter-annual climate variability on C and N dynamics in tallgrass prairie using DRI’s EcoCELL facility (with Jay Arnone at DRI, Dale Johnson at UNR, Yiqi Luo at OU, Linda Wallace at OU, and Dave Schimel at NCAR).
